Scrantastic Celebration

Good evening and thank you for joining us.

I'm candice kelly.((nick)) and i'm nick toma.

((nick)) we're still about an hour away from the 4th of july -- but some independence day activities are already underway.

((candice)) one of them is a long-standing tradition... that lights up the sky... over the city of scranton.

Eyewitness news reporter kelly choate is live for us tonight in the electric city..

Where "there ain't no party like a scranton party."

Kelly?

((kelly)) good evening, nick and candice.

It's quiet here now -- but earlier tonight -- courthouse square was the place to be in scranton -- for family fun and american flags!

((kelly))nats"national anthem" the scrantastic spectacular is quickly becoming a popular tradition in lackawanna county.

Thousands of people flocked to the electric city to celebrate the fourth of july a day early.mayor bill courtright/(d) scranton)"i think a lot of people come to see people that they haven't seen all year long, so it's almost like family and friends getting together!"it wouldn't be a party in northeastern pennsylvania without some good, greasy food.

But we found a unique vendor who brought a special guest -- donald trump.

Dawn vititoe sells these presidential pens for one dollar.(dawn vititoe/sells trump pens) 5:20-5:26"so when you pull it out, it says make america great again and protect our rights, the day of the inauguration for the 45th president!"nats"music"the famous northeastern pennsylvania philharmonic filled courthouse square with patriotic music -- under the direction of a female conductor.(melisse brunet/assistant conductor, nepa philharmonic)3:11-3:21 "i'm their second women assistant conductor in a row!

Before me was also a woman, and it's the first time in the world that exists!

So that's really good for scranton and wilkes-barre!"nats"fireworks" and don't forget about the fireworks!

(irma schnessel/enjoys fireworks) "they were spectacular!

They really were!

Just like the name says?

Absolutely!"nats "military"above all -- it's important to remember the true meaning of independence day.

Just ask 12-year-old lucy pawluck -- who put american flags in her hair.(lucy pawluck/12 years old) 13:59-14:10"because we're the land of the free.

Not a lot of countries get to do this.

We're definitely one of the most fortunate countries to be in.

So you got to show your patriotism and show why you're proud of your country!"

((kelly)) if you missed the music tonight -- you can enjoy the n-e-p-a philharmonic tomorrow night at kirby park in wilkes-barre.

Live in scranton -- kelly choate -- eyewitness news.
