Father Says Crying Honduran Girl on Time Cover Was Not Separated From Mother
The heart-wrenching image of a toddler crying as her mother is being patted down by a border patrol agent has become a symbol of family separation by the Trump Administration.????But now, the man who claims to be the little girl’s father, says she was in fact not separated from her mother.????In an interview with Reuters in Honduras, Denis Javier Varela Hernandez recognized his daughter from the iconic picture taken by Getty Images photographer John Moore.
????Which ultimately became the cover of Time magazine with president Donald Trump superimposed towering over the girl.????Varela says The mother, 32-year-old Sandra Sanchez, was detained with her nearly 2-year-old daughter, Yanela, at a facility in McAllen Texas.????
He also said he learned this week that mother and daughter were not separated and are detained together and are being housed at the South Texas Family Residential Center.????Honduran deputy foreign minister Nelly Jerez confirmed Valera's version of events.????The Trump administration's "zero-tolerance" policy had led to the separation of over 2,000 children from their parents at the border since the beginning of May.????The President has since signed an executive order not to separate families.??
