Al Ain looking to "write history" against River Plate, says coach

SHOWS: DUBAI, UAE (DECEMBER 17, 2018) (REUTERS - ACCESS ALL) 1.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) AL AIN COACH, ZORAN MAMIC, SAYING: "Great match, great opportunity for Al Ain to write history.

We have played until now a good tournament but we want to show more.

Of course we have to respect our opponents River Plate, its a great great club, a great team with lots of quality.

It will be very very hard for us, more hard than ever.

I don't think that Al Ain have played against a stronger team than River Plate in official games.

That is why we have to use this chance, this possibility, to learn, to enjoy, to celebrate, to enjoy in every point of life." STORY: Al Ain will be looking to go one better than fellow UAE side Al Jazira Club when they meet South American champions River Plate in Tuesday's (December 18) Club World Cup semi-final.

Al Jazira lost 2-1 in last year's semi-final to Real Madrid and no UAE side has ever made it to the competition's final.

"We have an opportunity to write history," Al Ain coach Zoran Mamic told reporters in Dubai on Monday (December 17).

Al Ain put three past Tunisia's Esperance in Saturday's (December 15) quarter-final, convincingly beating the African champions, however their tournament got off to a shaky start when they were taken to penalties by semi-professionals Team Wellington FC on Wednesday (December 12) in the tournament's only playoff.

Real Madrid meet Asian champions Kashima Antlers in the other semi-final on Wednesday (December 19) night, a rematch of the 2016 final which the Spanish side won in extra time.

The final will be held on Saturday (December 22) in Abu Dhabi.
