Russia arrests American on suspected espionage

Russia's state security service, the FSB, is reporting that an American citizen has been arrested in Moscow on espionage allegations.

Details are scarce.

A government-run media outlet has named the American as Paul Whelan but Reuters could not verify the exact spelling.

How he was arrested and other specifics are still unknown.

The U.S. embassy is deferring questions to the State Department in Washington, which has not commented yet.

Espionage convictions can carry up to a 20-year prison sentence in Russia.

The news comes less than a month after Russian citizen Maria Butina pled guilty in a U.S. court to conspiracy charges, and attempting to infiltrate conservative politicians and groups such as the NRA as a Russian agent.

Butina herself was only the latest in a string of accusations, indictments, and expulsions of suspected Russian intelligence officers in the United States.
