Winter Texan Struggles to Locate Wife's Death Certificate

An oklahoma man spent months attempting to get his wife's death certificate.

He called five on your side for help.

Channel 5's...cecilia gutierrez looked into-- the matter and found getting a loved one's...death certificate is a process.

The man we spoke with says he's tried to get his wife's death certificate death certificate since november.

John parrish knows all too well life came change on a dime.

"i'm frustrated i don't know what to do, but at this to do, but at this point i will do anything" he and his wife, janice called the rio grande valley his second home.

They spent three winters here.

This year parrish didn't stay past november.

"on november the 12th my wife passed away" he says that's when the long drawn out battle getting janice's death certificate began.

For months he tried to find her death certificate.

He called the justice of the peace and other county offices.

"i've been trying to get someone to call me back" "why do i have to wait two months for that?"

Funeral director for legacy chapels, lee castro tells us, aquiring a death certificate is a process.

"this is probably the most important process we do for the family" "they need it for insurance purposes, they need it for real estate, and what have you" he says the certificate goes through three people.

The funeral home, a doctor, and finally the state.

"the families able to go to the local registrars office and get copies" usually the death certificate will go to the county clerk's office, but there are some cities that don't file with the clerk.

That's what we found here.

"where the place of death occurs then that's where we file the death certificate" in hidalgo county the cities of edinburg, mcallen, and mission have their own data base.

So we called the city of mission... "hi mr. parrish... we found it" the city of mission tells us, parrish can aquire the certificate by mail request application or in person.

Parrish tells us he is already in the process of getting his wife janice's death certificate in his hands.

In the studio, cecilia gutierrez channel 5 news at 6.
