Rep. King votes to condemn his racist statements

The U.S. House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly on Tuesday to pass a resolution disapproving statements made by Representative Steve King that were roundly criticized as racist, and King himself voted in favor of it.

King told the House he is an "American nationalist" and said he does not support white supremacy.

NATS OF VOTE RESULTS The U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday voted to pass a resolution condemning statements made by Republican Iowa Representative Steve King that have been widely criticized as racist.

King, who has been accused by critics of making racist comments on multiple occasions, voted in favor of the measure.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) IOWA REPUBLICAN REPRESENTATIVE STEVE KING SAYING: "I want to make one thing abundantly clear.

I reject those labels and the evil ideology that they define.

Further, I condemn anyone that supports this evil and bigoted ideology." On Monday, House Republicans stripped King of his committee assignments after the New York Times quoted King saying "White nationalist, white supremacist, Western civilization - how did that language become offensive?" The resolution referred to Kings remarks and condemned racism in general.

House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy swiftly condemned the remarks.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) HOUSE REPUBLICAN LEADER KEVIN MCCARTHY SAYING: "It's not the party of Lincoln, It's definitely not America." King on Tuesday told his colleagues that "America's values" are "attainable by everyone" regardless of creed an rejected being a white supremacist.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) IOWA REPUBLICAN REPRESENTATIVE STEVE KING SAYING: "Under any fair political definition I am simply, an American nationalist." King said in a statement his comments were quote "completely mischaracterized." The House is also considering a bid to censure King, the chamber's most severe punishment short of expulsion...
