Hundreds flee after Indonesia volcano erupts

ROUGH CUT.

NO REPORTER NARRATION.

Indonesia's Karangetang volcano erupted on Saturday (February 2), forcing hundreds of residents to flee from their villages surrounding the slopes.

The volcano, located in Sulawesi, continued to erupt and emit heavy ash on Monday (February 4) and Thursday (February 7), as seen from videos provided by Indonesia's disaster mitigation agency.

The hot lava runoffs cut through two rivers and blocked the road to two villages on the island, forcing authorities to deliver aid via the sea.

The local government evacuated 132 people to temporary shelters, according to local reports.

Indonesia has ordered a volcano safety radius zone of at least 2.5 kilometres from the summit and the main crater, as the alert level of 1,827 metre-high volcano is kept at the second-highest level.
