Three southern Wisconsin high schools are among 15 chosen to attend a national jazz competition and festival in New York this spring.

A national competition in new york is welcoming three high school bands from southern wisconsin this spring.

It's a big honor -- especially considering only 15 schools across the country are going.

Our madalyn o'neill has more from sun praie's annual essentially ellington jazz fest happening today.

Steve sveum sun prairie band director 8:10 "it's a great, life-changing experience."

These sun prairie high schoolers are preparing for the opportunity of a lifetime.

Steve 7:47ish "they refer to is as the superbowl of jazz coetitions.

It really is."

They don't call him 'coach' ..

But band director steve sveum leads the way.

Steve 12:48 "there's a lot of growth, and you never know where that's going to take you, and that's the fun part about this."

At sun prairie's regional jazz fest saturday ..

Bas from across the area are hearing pointers from professional new york clinicians.

Nat sun prairie's jazz band is taking note ... as they get ready for the essentially ellington national competition and festival at the lincoln center this spring.

There's lots and lots of bands across the country that applied to do this."

They are one of fifteen nationally ..

Including beloit memorial and middleton.

A senior saxophonist one clinician referred to as the 'tom brady' of the team.

Megan 55:29 "that was me ... i'm prty sure tom brady is the quarterback of the patriots?"

Megan 56:04 "but i feel like jazz band is more of a collaboration between everybody."

Each plays their own part ... to create something bigger.

Megan 58:42 "it's such an incredible feeling to feel everybody else is on the same page, beat, groove.

They can feel it, you can feel it, it's a good feeling."

Student family programs, jazz at lincoln center 5:07 "these kids are working hard and they're swinging ... you hear how quickly they listen and sort of engage with the material they're given and how quickly they can change and become better like that.

Megan 57:30 "that means you're the best jazz band in the country, that would be crazy to think about."

The band has already won.
