FIFA votes for new Club World Cup

SHOWS: MIAMI, FLORIDA, UNITED STATES (MARCH 15, 2019) (REUTERS - ACCESS ALL) 1.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) FIFA PRESIDENT, GIANNI INFANTINO, SAYING: "I'm extremely today that the Council has taken this decision which is to start in 2021 with a new Club World Cup, a revamped Club World Cup in the slot of the Confederations Cup so I think from 17th of June to 4th of July or something, along these days of 2021 in two-and-a-half years.

From now the world will see a real Club World Cup where the best teams in the club will compete to crown the Club World champion.

This is important today because of course club football is evolving, it's moving a different pace in different parts of the world and it is our duty and our responsibility to make sure that we encourage professional club football all over the world and what more, what better than having a real club football and not a competition like the one we have now.

We want to have an exciting competition, we want to have a prestigious competition, we want to have an inclusive competition for clubs and we will have this with the new Club World Cup starting in 2021 so I am very, very happy that this decision has been taken." STORY: FIFA will go ahead with a new 24-team Club World Cup starting in 2021, the ruling body's President Gianni Infantino said on Friday (March 15), setting the global body in conflict with Europe's top clubs.

Infantino, speaking at a news conference in Miami, said FIFA had made the decision at its council meeting on Friday.

The tournament would be held instead of the Confederations Cup in June 2021.

No host nation has been decided yet, Infantino said.

The competition, however, immediately faced a boycott from Europe's leading clubs, which include the likes of Real Madrid and Manchester United.

The European Clubs Association (ECA), which represents 232 European clubs, including all the leading teams, wrote a letter asking Infantino not make a decision now and saying they would not take part in the 2021 tournament.
