According to a report by Reuters, on Wednesday, the US Justice Department accused Alabama's state prisons of violating inmates' Constitutional rights by failing to protect them from violence and sexual abuse.

Prosecutors and the nation's top civil rights law enforcement official said that they possessed evidence that the state was violating prisoners' Eighth Amendment protection against cruel and unusual punishment.
