(broll of kim and trump walking together) North Korea criticized another White House official this week… taking aim at President Trump's U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton just days after Pyongyang said it wanted Secretary of State Mike Pompeo replaced in nuclear talks… Although Trump has said he's open to a third summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong UN, Bolton, in an interview with Bloomberg News, said that first there needed to be a quote "real indication from North Korea that they've made the strategic decision to give up nuclear weapons…" North Korean Vice Foreign Minister hit back at Bolton, calling his comments (quote) nonsense and questioning whether they came out of (quote) "incomprehension of the intentions of the top leaders of the DPRK and the U.S." The vice minister threw another hit saying Bolton looked quote "dim-sighted'... Meanwhile, Pompeo on Friday said he was not going anywhere.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. SECRETARY OF STATE MIKE POMPEO, SAYING: "Nothing has changed.
We're continuing to work, negotiate.
Still in charge of the team." North Korea has called on Pompeo to be excluded from future talks about it's nuclear program and be replaced with someone (quote) " more careful and mature in communicating…" North Korea's Pompeo demand came hours after Pyongyang announced its FIRST weapons test since talks with the U.S. broke down.
It said the test was overseen by leader Kim Jong Un - and featured what it called a 'tactical guided weapon.'..the word "tactical" implying a short-range or conventional weapon, as opposed to the long-range ballistic missiles that have been seen as a threat to the U.S. Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan confirmed that it was not a ballistic missile test and appeared to play down concerns.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) ACTING U.S. SECRETARY OF DEFENSE PATRICK SHANAHAN, SAYING: "The test -- or the launch, depending on how you want to characterize it -- was not a ballistic missile, so I think that's a statement in and of itself." Both the test and North Korea's comments against Pompeo and now Bolton may be part of an overall strategy to ramp up pressure on Washington after Kim gave a year-end deadline for the U.S. to change its approach to talks after the February summit ended with no deal…
