Assange rejects extradition to United States

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange told a London court Thursday he did not want to be extradited to the United State, which wants to try him for one of the biggest breaches of classified information in history.

Assange addressed the court by video link from a British prison -- saying he had "protected" many people.

It came a day after he was jailed for nearly a year for skipping bail by holing up in the Ecuadorian embassy in London.

He took refuge there in 2012 to avoid another extradition order -- this one from Sweden and connected to an allegation of rape, which he denies.

Police dragged him out last month.

Assange's lawyer says hiding there was an act of desperation to avoid a U.S. trial over the secret diplomatic cables.

The lawyer cited the treatment of Chelsea Manning as an example.

Manning is said to have been forced to parade naked while in a military prison and subjected to sleep deprivation.

The United States accuses Assange of conspiring with Manning to gain access to a government computer during the 2010 incident that vaulted Wikileaks into global headlines.

Manning, through Wikileaks, released hundreds of thousands of internal documents -- many embarrassing -- pertaining to American foreign policy and its wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

It included video of a U.S. military helicopter killing a dozen civilians in Iraq, including two Reuters journalists.
