U.S. B-52 bombers reach Middle East in message to Iran

B-52 bombers ordered by the White House have reached a U.S. base in Qatar to counter what Washington describes as threats from Iran.

The U.S. said earlier this week that a number of B-52 bombers would be part of a buildup of forces in the Middle East after U.S. intelligence signaled that Iran was possibly making plans to attack American troops.

(SOUNDBITE) (ENGLISH) U.S. SECRETARY OF STATE MIKE POMPEO SAYING: "We have continued to see activity that leads us to believe that there may be escalation that is taking place and so we're taking all the appropriate actions." Iran has dismissed the move - accusing the U.S. of trying to intimidate through 'psycological warfare.'

Meanwhile - President Trump on Thursday said he wanted to speak to Tehran's leaders.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: "What I would like to see with Iran: I would like to see them call me." His remarks come after the U.S. on Wednesday slapped sanctions on Iranian industrial metal following Tehran's announcement that it would relax restrictions on its nuclear program and threatened moves that might breach the 2015 international pact.

Also sent to the Middle East - the Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group..

Whose deployment was fast-tracked by Trump's administration this week.

After winding through the Suez Canal into the Red Sea on Thursday, the group is now under the commander overseeing U.S. Naval forces in the Middle East.

He told Reuters exclusively Thursday that threats from Iran will not prevent him from sending the carrier through the vital Strait of Hormuz, if needed.
