Mexican troops block migrants as tariffs loom

Ahead of another day of talks between U.S. and Mexican officials to try and hammer out a deal on migration…a show of force in Mexico.

According to witnesses, Mexican soldiers, police and migrations officials on Wednesday blocked hundreds of migrants after they crossed the border from Guatemala into Mexico.

Dozens were detained.

The response marks a toughening of the Mexican government's efforts to stop the flow of Central American migrants into the U.S. in the face of tariff threats by U.S. President Donald Trump.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) UNITED STATES PRESIDENT, DONALD TRUMP, SAYING: "Something dramatic could happen.

We've told Mexico the tariffs go on and I mean it." The confrontation between migrants and Mexican officials also comes as monthly arrests at the U.S. border reach levels not seen in over a decade.

With U.S. Customs and Border Protection reporting nearly 133,000 arrests last month.

Back in Washington, GOP senators voiced their concerns over Trump's tactic, but took a 'wait it out' approach (SOUNDBITE) (ENGLISH) SENATOR CHUCK GRASSLEY SAYING: "Nothing on how we're going to proceed but to be very vocal that we think tariffs are hurting the chances of getting USMCA.

(SOUNDBITE) (ENGLISH) SENATOR JOHN CORNYN SAYING: "Mexico does seem to be responding in a positive way and recognizes the harm this causes to their economy." Meanwhile Trump on his Europe visit hit back at his own.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) UNITED STATES PRESIDENT, DONALD TRUMP, SAYING: "A lot of people, senators included, they have no idea what they're talking about when it comes to tariffs." If a deal isn't reached, the tariffs will kick in Monday..

Meaning the U.S. would be in a serious trade dispute with both China and Mexico, two of its three top trading partners.
