'This is About Children': Kirsten Gillibrand Denounces Migrant Detention Centers

Several Democratic presidential candidates visited the Homestead Detention Center in Florida’s Miami-Dade County on June 28, a day after the second Democratic debate.

Among them was New York Sen Kirsten Gillibrand, who denounced the conditions of migrant detention centers and stressed the “trauma” it can cause children in them.

Gillibrand was joined by candidates Julián Castro, Pete Buttigieg, Kamala Harris, John Hickenlooper, and Marianne Williamson.

The facility houses thousands of migrant children, aged 13 to 17, who were separated from their parents while crossing the border, according to local media.

“I have toured [US Department of Health and Human Services] facilities before in Texas,” Gillibrand said.

“I know what it looks like.

It’s like a prison.

The beds are lined just like you’d see in a prison.

No personal effects, nothing like home, no comfort.” Fellow candidates Elizabeth Warren and Amy Klobuchar visited the center on June 26.

They were followed on June 27 by Bernie Sanders, Beto O’Rourke, Bill de Blasio, and Tulsi Gabbard.
