Thousands of Seniors Take Part in 'Silver-Haired' March to Support Extradition Bill Protesters

An estimated 9,000 elderly Hong Kong citizens took to the streets on Wednesday, July 17, in what was dubbed a “silver-haired” march against the city’s now-suspended controversial extradition bill, the South China Morning Post reported.

Yeung Po-hei, a 67-year-old co-organizer of the march, told the Post that the march was intended to “send a message to the city and the government that…senior residents support the youngsters and echo their demands,” referring to recent demonstrations in Hong Kong, including one on July 1 where protesters took over the city’s Legislative Council building.

In a speech, Yeung sympathized with the protesters, saying: “In their fight against the extradition bill, our youth brave truncheons, tear gas, pepper spray, rubber bullets, violent arrest and, harsh punishment.

We are proud of them – their determination, mobilization and tactics, teamwork and self-organization.” This footage shows the protesters gathering in Charter Garden in Hong Kong’s Central district.
