Jubilant Demonstrators Celebrate as Puerto Rico's Rossello Steps Down
Puerto Rico’s Governor Ricardo Rossello stepped down on August 2 after weeks of mass protests in the US territory, sparking celebrations on the streets of San Juan.
Rossello announced on July 25 that he would resign, delaying the move for more than a week to allow for an “orderly transition,” El Nuevo Dia reported.
Days earlier, he announced that he would step down as head of the New Progressive Party (NPP) and would not seek reelection.
He had faced calls for his resignation after group messages were leaked that contained sexist and homophobic comments.
Puerto Rico’s Center for Investigative Journalism also reported on a “multi-million dollar corruption network” that they allege took place with Rossello’s knowledge and involved some of his closest aides.
