Dorian makes landfall in NC and slams Outer Banks

Hurricane Dorian made landfall on the Outer Banks of North Carolina on Friday, hitting the beach resort area with powerful winds and battering waves days after reducing parts of the Bahamas to rubble.

(SOUNDBITE) (ENGLISH) NORTH CAROLINA GOV.

ROY COOPER, SAYING: "It was a long night for many North Carolinians along our coast." North Carolina governor Roy Cooper on Friday warned that Hurricane Dorian continued to batter the Outer Banks and northeastern shores of the state after officially making landfall near Hatteras.

(SOUNDBITE) (ENGLISH) NORTH CAROLINA GOV.

ROY COOPER, SAYING: "The danger right now is the rising storm surge of 4 to 7 feet and flash floods as the hurricane churns along the coast." The governor voicing concern for the hundreds of people trapped on Ocracoke Island, a popular vacation spot in the Outer Banks.

(SOUNDBITE) (ENGLISH) NORTH CAROLINA GOV.

ROY COOPER, SAYING: "There are rescue teams ready as soon as they can get in.

This latest development shows we cannot let our guard down." Dorian has soaked the Carolinas since early Thursday, whipping up more than a dozen tornadoes - one wiping out parts of another popular tourist spot, Emerald Isle.

John Flick, his wife and cat survived a twister that reduced this RV park to piles of twisted metal and splintered wood.

(SOUNDBITE) (ENGLISH) HURRICANE SURVIVOR JOHN FLICK, SAYING: "We went into the bathroom, power went out, we were there less than a minute." Myrtle Beach, South Carolina also lashed with heavy rains, high winds and flooding.

Governors in the region declared states of emergency, shut schools, opened shelters and readied National Guard troops.

In the Carolinas alone, more than 900,000 people had been ordered to evacuate their homes.

At least four storm-related deaths have been reported in the U.S. Dorian is expected to push north and out to sea later on Friday and bring tropical storm winds to Nantucket Island and Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, early Saturday.
