China says ready to buy more U.S. goods

China's top diplomat Wang Yi on Thursday urged a show of goodwill ahead of trade talks with the U.S. next month.

He said China, for its part, was willing to step up purchases of American products.

Eve Johnson reports.

China's top diplomat on Thursday (September 26) said Beijing was willing to buy more farm products from the U.S. China earlier said it was opening its doors to American soybeans and pork.

It may be a friendly gesture ahead of trade talks next month.

Foreign Minister Wang Yi spoke to Reuters on the sidelines of the United Nations.

He urged goodwill on both sides as the U.S. and China get ready to hash out their trade differences.

(SOUNDBITE) (Mandarin) CHINA STATE COUNCILLOR AND FOREIGN MINISTER, WANG YI, SAYING: "We hope both sides can take more enthusiastic measures, reduce pessimistic language and actions.

If everyone does this, talks will not only resume, but will proceed and yield results." Wang's remarks briefly sent U.S. stocks into positive territory Thursday (September 26) afternoon.

The U.S.-China trade war has dragged on for nearly 15 months.

But talks have made little progress, and in the meantime both countries have slapped tariffs on billions of dollars worth of each other's products.

Last week, however, China purchased about 600,000 tonnes of U.S. soybeans.

U.S. President Donald Trump praised Beijing for the move On Thursday (September 26), he said an end to the trade war could come sooner than people think.

The next round of high-level talks is set for October in Washington.
