Tornadoes sweep across southeastern U.S., killing at least 3 - officials

Communities in the southeastern United States in ruins Tuesday, after tornadoes tore through the region killing at least two people in northern Alabama and one person in Louisiana.

That's according to officials who said the devastation began early Monday.

Survey teams were sent out at first light Tuesday to assess the extent of the damage.

Splintered trees and downed power lines covered the streets in Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama, where more than 28,000 people experienced power outages.

More rain and wind is expected in the South as the storms push off into southeastern Georgia, Florida’s panhandle and the Carolina coasts in the morning hours.
