Covid-19's Impact on Pork Producers
The Tyson Food Plant is shut down in Waterloo, Iowa.

Is shutting down its pork plant in waterloo, iowa until further notice.

It comes as local county officials urged tyson to close the plant voluntarily?

After a suspected covi?19 outbreak.

The county health department announced yesterda?that 182 of the county's 374 cases are linked to the plant.

Tyson says it decided to stop production because of a combination of absent workers, covi?19 cases and community concerns.

Waterloo mayo?

Quentin hart says we need to come so many people from different walks of life and immigrants that provide the critical service to help prepare food for the entire country.

And it hurts when it feels like your pleas to people falls on deaf ears.

This is not a political issue.

It's not a republican.

It's not a democrat.

This is a humanitarian issue and we needed proactive steps to be able to squash this threat.

That plant closure is having a big financial impact on our local farmers.

Kimt new three's calyn thompson joins us live with how pork producers are handling the news.xxx live (going live at grocery store) amy?

This was a tough blow for farmers.

Those in the industry tell me when people are shopping at grocery stores like this one?

They're still looking for pork.

But with plants closing?

It will be harder to meet that demand.

Yesterday?

I told you i spoke with a hog farmer near lewiston, minnesota.

He's been sending his pigs to the tyson plant in waterloo for two decades.

He's already had to make tough decisions and euthanize baby pigs.

I checked in with him again today and he says if it gets to a point of euthanizing marke?size pigs... that could be disastrous.

Industry leaders stress these plants*need to stay open for the sake of the farmers.xxx it's gonna force some family farms out of business.

Its financial impact is huge and hopefully it doesn't go on for a very long time and we can get it figured out with our officials to get these plants up and going as soon as we can.

Like all of us?

Farmers are taking this pandemc one day at a time.

They tell me you can help by continuing to buy their products at grocery stores... whether that be meat or dairy.

Live in rochester, calyn thompson, kimt news 3./// the minnesota department of agriculture is also working to help the producers who are impacted.
