The money is going to provide gardening plots at Churchill Community Garden for families in need.

An earth day fundraiser for a eugene nonprofit that's helping immigrant families left organizers floored.

As kezi 9 news reporter michael sevren shows, the money will keep families fed after they put the work in.

Stand up it was a call for help to make sure 24 immigrant families could keep food on the table during the pandemic by growing it here at the churchill community garden.

And to do it, leaders at the nonprofit huerto de la familia - the family garden - say they needed $2,400.

And the community answered the call.

After posting the fundraiser on facebook, the nonprofit reached its goal in just 6 hours - and the money keeps coming in.

Sot: it's truly a testament to our community executive director marissa zarate tells me they've never raised this much so fast.

The funds will be used to get the garden plots ready for irrigation for families that are already on their waiting list.

She says many immigrant families don't qualify for stimulus checks and unemployment - despite having paid into the system.

Sot: in light of that we recognize this going to have more of an impact on immigrant families in our community then other folks and we want to be able to step up and meet that need.

Zarate says they plan to have the plots ready in two weeks.
