Farmers and other food vendors are back in business at the starkville community market, but under strict guidelines due to safety concerns from covid-19.

Our savannah gaido has more on opening day of the market and how the community is reacting.

Business was booming at the starkville community market saturday morning.

Faithful patrons lined up early to get produce and other favorites from local growers and vendors.

"well we have had a great turnout today and i'm actually very pleased and i think a lot of our board members are very pleased.

We've had a great turnout and our vendors are doing really well and a few have already sold out."

The market opened with some new safety guidelines because of coronavirus concerns.

"so during the pandemic, we are taking precautions such as no more than 10 people in at a time and we are asking all of our community members to attend and our customers to wear masks and gloves as well as the vendors and then we are also asking people to bring exact change and credit cards and doing digital payments."

"just making little modifications like that to make sure that you know we are as safe and efficient as possible."

Many businesses and vendors have been closed in mississippi for weeks, but some are slowly and safely making a comeback.

"umble coffee company is an online and wholesale mainly company, and so our wholesale has definitely been affected because we do a lot of restaurants, and so that has definitely been affected.

Our online has actually picked us as people are home, they are just kind of wanting to squirrel away whatever coffee they can just like toilet paper and everything else."

For vendors, being able to come back to market means an uptick in sales.

For patrons, it's a little taste of normalcy as the state remains under orders to stay home as much as possible.

"i think people are excited to be here and were glad for that and pretty much everyone in the community has followed all the guidelines so were especially grateful for everyone's continued support."

"we appreciate everyone's patience as we continue to grow the market and very appreciate the support of our vendors."

Umble coffee company has dedicated a social media handle @umblestarkville to promote covid- 19 education and how to support local business, so visit them if you would like more information.
