NCAA supports proposal for athletes to land endorsements

Ll: the ncaa announced support for a proposal allowing college athletes to sign endorsement deals and be paid for other work, as long as their school isn't the one paying.

Its been a topic of debate for several years, but the latest move puts the plan in effect for the 2021-2022 season... pkg: college athletes don't bring in any money right now from their image or likeness.

"we live in america where it's a free society and you can go out and try to earn a living."

Former una basketball coach, bobby champagne, knew one day college athletes would be paid.

He thinks it's fair "every other college student can take 12 hours and get a full time job."

Champange says being a student athlete is a full time job.

"and now they can get a little side hustle."

If the new rules pass, athletes can hire an agent, make money off their social media accounts, football camps, and they can use their school's name to promote themselves.

"if you're a college athlete at a small college in a small town, there will be an opportunity for you to use your likeness."

Champagne says amateur athletes earning money isn't a new concept.

Olympians have profited for years.

"they don't make money off swimming or running, they make money off doing a car commercial."

The money will have an immediate impact on a student athletes life, but beyond sports, champange thinks this is an excellent way to prepare the players for life after sports.

"99% of them are not going to make money as a professional athlete, so this is an opportunity for them to harness some skills, if they're a marketing major, or a business major, they could do an internship in college and figure out the marketplace."

Ll: again, this rule change isn't final... the next step in the process of getting players paid is to include further consideration from divisions i, ii and iii.

All three levels are expected to allow players to get paid as soon as next year.
