Tonight we are learning the number of people hospitalized from coronavirus in north alabama.

There are currently 6 people in hospitals in madison county, 4 people in marshall county and 4 people in colbert county.

The highest number of people in hospitals because of the virus is in morgan county.

Waay 31's sydney martin is live at huntsville city hall this afternoon.

She learned why decatur morgan hospital is seeing the biggest amount of hospitalizations in north alabama.

Today- spillers said there are 19 people hospitalized with coronavirus in morgan county.

And decatur morgan hospital dedicated a special covid-19 unit to treat these patients.

Of those patients he said 8 of them are in the icu- and 5 of them are on a ventilator.

Spillers said in total in north alabama there are 35 people hospitalized with the virus-- which means more than half of the patients are in decatur morgan hospital and he thinks they caught the virus just from more people getting back out again.

David spillers, huntsville hospital ceo "what we are going to see going forward is more community acquired cases as people get together and assemble and so forth.

There may be a skilled nursing facility that had a few cases in there, but in hospitalizations there is no significant pattern."

Today- i also asked spillers about the numbers from the alabama department of public health- as the dashboard it provides changes frequently.

He told me he looks at the 14 day average of cases to get an idea of how the state or each county is doing.

Spillers believes a delay in reporting can sometimes cause confusion or fear- and explained to me looking at a 2 week period gives a better idea.

Live this afternoon- spillers said they are still testing asymptomatic people in the community- and encourages anyone who has reason to believe they might have been exposed to the virus to get tested.
