Former South African freedom fighter appears in court on rape charges

A man was detained on Friday at the Strandfontein police station for allegedly raping a 13 year old girl child.

The man appeared in the Mitchells Plain Magistrate's Court and the matter was postponed for a formal bail application on Monday 29 June.

The identity of the man is known but cannot be published until he pleads.

The man is known as a former MK (Umkhonto we Sizwe) combatant.

MK was the military arm of the African National Congress, South Africa's ruling party.

MK was disbanded in 1994 with the advent of democracy.

The man is currently employed as a sub council manager in the City of Cape Town.

He is also known to be involved with a community based organisation known as Unchain the Plain.
