Decatur is taking the first steps in mandating masks in public.

Tonight, the city council will hold a special meeting to vote on an ordinance mandating face masks be worn at all times.

Joining us now to break it down for us is decatur mayor tab bowling.

Mayor bowling, good morning.

Should the council vote to make wearing masks mandatory in your opinion?

The obvious question is how to enforce it ... especially when the fine could be up to $500 dollars?

If there's a unanimous vote for the ordinance, it goes into effect.

If not unanimous, but it does pass, this bill could be sidelined for a while right?

Further delays with independence day coming up and more people getting out.

Health officials are fearful of even more of a spike.

Is that something the council will consider?

If the mandatory mask ordinance is not approved unanimously, given the seriousness of this pandemic and the spike in cases, how does that change someone's attitude if wearing a mask is only strongly encouraged?

How do the people in decatur feel about a mandatory mask ordinance?

One person we spoke to said this is about personal liberty.

If approved, where would all this stop?

There are some exceptions to the proposed ordinance, children under two are exempt, you can take it off to you can eat and drink, but exemptions during medical exams, hair salons and others.

Those are close contact.

What good is that in slowing the spread?

Decatur mayor tab bowling ... good luck tonight.

Thatnks for joining us.
