Fans not allowed at Syracuse games in Dome "as of yet"

Governor Cuomo and his office said that under the current guidelines, large social gatherings, such as those in stadiums at sports games are not authorized at this time.

That could change as we move forward.

Football would still be playing its games at the new and improved carrier dome in less than two months time.

A big question mark heading into the year is if fans would be allowed in the seats should the orange - in fact - be playing.

During a conference call with media today - governor cuomo said that much like pro sports - college games would be allowed at venues across the state - but with no fans in attendance.

His budget director rob mujica said that under the current state guidance - large social gatherings such as fans in a stadium are not authorized as of yet.

Many have taken this to mean that there is a ban on fans at college sports games for the fall.

However - on twitter jon campbell of the u-s- a today network pointed out that the key term "as of yet" means that under the current conditions it wouldn't be allowed - but that there is no definitive ban on it for the fall season.

Cuomo's secretary melissa derosa acknowledged that tweet and said it was "correct."

So where we stand today - fans would not be allowed at the dome this fall - but that could still change.

Syracuse director of athletics john wildhack addressing the topic today - saying: "the health and safety of our student-athletes, our fans, our campus community and the broader central new york community is our chief priority.

We appreciate and support governor cuomo's continued commitment and ongoing efforts to keeping our communities safe.

We will seek further clarification regarding the opportunity to have fans at our games and move forward appropriately under the guidance of the state."

The orange football team is set to open its season on the road against boston college.

Their first home game - as of now - would be september 19 against colgate.
