Man rescued from 7th floor

At the madison plaza apartments.

The building was evacuated and streets surrounding the complex were closed while crews battled the fire.

News channel 2's brent kearney has this story.

"people were staring up and i saw a little bit of smoke it wasn't too bad at the time the fire department wasnt here yet."

Madison plaza resident remington sumner watched as smoke billowed out of the 7th floor apartment and quickly sprang into action.

None sumner says: "so instantly i ran up to help people and we ran up to the 7th floor where the fire was" remington tells me he immediately began knocking on doors trying to get as many people out as he could including the apartment where the fire was.

But rome fire say the door was barricaded shut.

"we codnt getis door open and we had the feextinguise just eventually had to get out of there because the smoke got so bad."

When the fire department arrived on the scene heavy smoke could be seen coming from the apartment.

Rome deputy chief liddy tells me the tenant was of the apartment was on the balcony outside.

Deputy chief says:"they had smoke on the 7th floor of the building we also had a victim on the 7th floor balcony that required to be taken down.

We got on that level balcony put the victim into the bucket and rescued him from the 7th floor."

When fire fighters tried to rescue him, the tenant who appeared to be mentally unstable.

Did not go quietly.

He began throwing things at the fire fighters.

"i've seen him up there standing there and refusing to go with the fire people."

Rome fire lieutenant scott bush then repeled from the roof and detained the tenant.

He was then escorted out of the apartment and handed over to rome police.

The man was taken to the local hospital for evaluation but liddy says the apartment is a total loss.

Residents worried their apartments could be damaged.

Davis says: "you dont know what could be happening to the apartments underneath that so these people might have to move."

"damage extended out into the hallways with heat damage and water damage.

Same issue in the other apartments with smoke damage."

The tenant suffered minor burns to his arm and their were no other injuries.

A joint investigation between the rome fire department and police department is taking place to determine a cause.
