UAH Sports Pushed To 2021

Sports Director Lynden Blake spent the day working to find out how colleges in north Alabama are dealing with no sports in the fall.

Alabama in huntsville's hockey team!

It's a waiting game for the team right now.

It's the gulf conference that pushed back fall sports.

The hockey team plays division one hockey in the western collegiate athletic association.

That conference hasn't made any changes to its winter schedule yet.

For almost the rest of the school's athletes, the focus is now on the spring.

Nearly all of uah fall sports are canceled this year, after the gulf sourth postponed compeition util at least january first.

"cross country will hopesfully compete int he fall, everything else will have some type of meaningful compeition in the spring."

Uah athletic director and volleyball coach cade smith, says the spring format hasn't been set, but for charger basketball, he expects a conference only schedule.

"conference only, leading into conference championships and hopefully ncaa tournaments."

As a coach, smith says, it's imporant to stay involved with his players, even without games.

"while the competition isn't there, the ability to intereact with them and come together as a team is there."

Smith told me the conference communicated well throughout the pandemic.

While not every school agrees on pushing sports to 2021, smith says he has a responsbility to put student's health first.

"it's important we keep preaching that message no matter what side of the asile you fall on."

A lot of donors put in a lot of money to save the hockey program earlier this summer.

So you can expect a lot of anxious moments until the western collegiate athletic association makes a decision.

That conference is made up of schools through most of the country.

Today - we learned the "big south conference" delayed its fall sports season due to coronavirus concerns as well.

That means the univeristy of north alabama won't have a football season this fall.
