Gov. Cuomo: High school sports decision coming within the week

With the fall season intended to get underway in mid-September, yet still not allowed by the state, Gov.

Andrew Cuomo said guidance on interscholastic sports will be coming "within the week."

The pressing question for the past couple of months.

Today - we may have gotten closer to the answer.

During governor cuomo's conference call with media today - the question was asked regarding interscholastic sports.

The state athletic association has already delayed the start of fall sports by nearly a month.

The original start date was supposed to be this coming monday - the 24th.

The governor deferred the question to budget director robert mujica - for the latest on where we stand.

((no cg)) robert mujica: we've allowed youth sports to occur in the state with guidelines.

We have not allowed tournamenple team against another team or against another school oragainse then you were mixing them together.

So intramural, within the teams, yes, within the schools yes, but as far as competing with other schools that we have not said yes to yet.

Right now the focus really is on the classrooms and getting those open before we get into sports gov.

Andrew cuomo: i understand the thrust of the question that is coming so let's say we will have an answer within the week.

So there you have it - a decision coming within the next week.

Should interscholastic sports be given the ok - fall practices would begin on september 21st.

The state athletic association is also has a condensed season plan in place as a back-up that would see all seasons take place over ten week periods each beginning in january.
