A new, faster way to test residents at long-term care facilities is on the way.

Waay 31's ashley carter joins us live outside of signature healthcare at whitseburg gardens...just one of the facilities on the list to receive a rapid testing machine.

Right now residents get tested once a week here but the time it takes to get those results back have varied....but that's expected to change when they receive a rapid coronavirus testing machine from the federal government.

Signature healthcare of whitesburg gardens says 25 of its residents and 8 employees tested positive in the last 2 weeks!

One woman whose aunt is currently in an isolated area of the facility due to a positive coronavirus test says this is good news.

She told us at one point the facility was getting results back within 24 hours but that changed and began to take almost a week.

Maureen lokken: "so you've got people sacrificing greatly, but we aren't doing what we need to do to get the resources to protect the patients."

The testing machines are expected to be available by the end of the month whiteseburg gardens is just one of 30 nursing homes across north alabama who will be receiving the machines.
