Gas Line Break in Madisonville

Construction workers accidentally struck the main gas line at the intersection of Main Street and KY-281, forcing multiple businesses to shut down temporarily.

The line was just repaired within the last thirty minutes-- that part of the street -- is open now-- after being shut down -- for several hours.

Madisonville fire department says the leak started at around 1:30 this afternoon when construction workers accidentally struck the main line gas line.

Kentucky transportation cabinet crews set up detour signs and barricades at the intersection of main street and highway 281 in madisonville line break.

Several businesses in the area have been closed for the past three hours as construction crews work to repair the line.

While the fire department says the break isn severe, the threat of gas spreading to nearby businesses led to the decision to close the road.

Because of wind direction it was a potential of the gas was moving this way but there was a potential of gas build up in these two stores so we had to shut these two stores down until they made the repairs?

While crews continue to work on repairing the line will need to find alternate routes around the intersection.

One gas station employee says he only had 5 cars in three hours because of the road closure department does expect the line to be repaired within the hour.
