Internet connectivity in the Hoosier state - Here's what each of Indiana's governor candidates has to say about their solutions to help keep people connected

Election day.

"this week" "on news 10"..

You'll hear from candidates running "for indiana governor".

"our executive producer"..

Interviewed republican governor "eric holcomb", democratic candidate "woody myers" and libertarian candidate "donald rain-water" all through zoom.

We are rotating through the order of the responses.

Today's question focuses in on internet connectivity issues facing the state, especially as children learn from home.

We asked each candidate about "their solutions" to meeting the internet needs of hoosiers.

/////// /////// internet availability for everyone in our state at a at a really good speed broadband, and not just the old-fashioned dsl internet, is a number one priority for indiana.

First of all we've got to put that the internet in the same bucket as we do other utilities so leave the water sewer of electricity all of them are regulated in a way that make sure that we have rules about how we are utilizing them.

It's no longer a luxury it is not a luxury to get internet that it's a necessity people are getting their healthcare over the other internet today over the other healthcare getting their people are it's a necessity internet that to get internet that it's a necessity people are getting their healthcare over the other internet today with telehealth services increasing services telehealth with internet today over the other healthcare getting their people are it's a necessity internet that to get not a luxury luxury it is longer a them.

It's no are utilizing about how we have rules sure that we have rules about how we have rules sure that we way that make regulated in a way that make sure that we have rules about how we are utilizing them.

It's no longer a luxury it is not a luxury to get internet that it's a necessity people are getting their healthcare over the other internet today with telehealth services increasing dramatically.

You can you pay your bills, you can pay your taxes..

Your taxes are done on the internet..

So i think it there or just a ton of different reasons to say hey look it's time.

I think first of all what we have to do is look very carefully at why we don't have independent private sector technology businesses that are investing in broadband internet throughout the state of indiana are we creating have we created artificial monopolies with excessive regulations that cause technology in elevators not to want to make that investment how do we turn that around because i believe that is.

There's money to be made somebody wants to make it.

We didn't want students to have to drive to a mcdonald's or subway parking lot to get wi-fi or go to the school parking lot or go to some of these businesses and so we took $100 million the biggest largest infusion of state dollars, which is greater than i think any other state in the country and we said we want to leverage our partnerships with local providers the private sector so we've already gone through just about $79 million of that awarding those funds and and that is partnered with the private sector to about the same amount funding.

Thousands of hoosiers to broadband internet service we've also to get it your point or your of the question we've also taken $61 million in gears act on and and got matching students and teachers to provide that conductivity and then will continue to work with those like the usda card because this is a federal this because this is usda card those like the work with continue to work with those like the usda card because this is a federal this is an american issue not just an indiana issue.
