She's live outside the madison county courthouse - where local organizers spent months protesting and asking for the commission to move the monument.

Waay 31's ashley's carter been covering this story since the overnight house..

She spoke with some the event organizers.

Ashley what did they tell you?

People have come by throughout the day to see the empty area where the monument once stood.

One local organizer told me after months of fighting for change - it took some time to process the fact that the monument was moved.

David pearson with the rosa parks day committee told me it felt surreal to see the monument relocated.

But he says the fight for social justice doesn't end here.

The biggest delay in moving the monument was the "alabama memorial preservation act."

That makes it illegal to move any monument or memorial in place for more than 40 years.

Pearson says the next step involves removing the 20-17 law as a whole.

"for me it's not a time of celebration, it's a time of acceleration.

We need to accelerate our efforts now to ensure that this law is a thing of the past."

Pearson says he wants to continue to work with lawmakers to get the law removed to make it easier for cities to take monuments down on their own accord we don't have any details on how the madison county commission was able to move the monument without paying the $25,000 fine.

But in a statement from district 6 commissioner jess henry malone - he says hey did find a way to move the monument legally, which was important to them.
