A teenager who lost his life trying to protect his mother was remembered tonight by his friends and family in austin.

A chilly december night did nothing to diminish the crowd that turned out for a candlight vigil honoring young hero julio cesar rodriguez.

Kimt news 3's anthony monzon joins us from st.

Mary's hospital where the boy's mother remains hospitalized.

Well katie and george... tonight a pastor who is close to the family says the boy's mother's condition has improved.

He tells me she is now out of intensive care and continuing her recovery here at saint marys.

But miles away in austin.... hundreds of people gathered to remember her son... the boy community members are calling a hero.

That's what the crowd said as they let go of their balloons commemoratin g the life of julio cesar rodriguez.

Many lit candles... and laid flowers near an image of julio at the austin community bandshell.

It was a moment family and community members alike took to honor this young man's life... including "we're one community, and it's terrible that this event was... it's going to... it's pulling our community together a little bit.

This will be... this will go down in the history of austin as a story of heroism."

Another speaker tonight reminded everyone to shh their loved ones tonight... because you just don't know what tomorrow will bring.
