Endangered Bilby Makes a Comeback in Australia
Endangered Bilby Makes a Comeback in Australia

32 greater bilbies just got a new home in one of Australia’s largest protected areas: the Newhaven Wildlife Sanctuary.

It’s part of an effort to reintroduce bilbies to central Australia, where the vulnerable animal’s population has dramatically dropped to fewer than 10,000 individual animals.

The small marsupials are ecosystem engineers, creating healthier soil by burrowing and digging.

Some of their biggest threats include feral cats, foxes, and fires, making this predator-free sanctuary an exciting place for them to be released.

The bilbies flew on a charter plane from their original home at the Taronga Western Plains Zoo before being released into the 9,450-hectare sanctuary.
