Beijing warns of 'resolute and strong measures' over US Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan

Spokesperson of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs warned of severe consequences for the US as its House Speaker Nancy Pelosi departed for Taiwan despite Beijing's protests.

"We pay close attention to Pelosi's itinerary.

If the US insists on going its own way, China will take resolute and strong measures to safeguard China's sovereignty, security and interests", Hua Chunying said adding that "countermeasure by China will be justified and necessary".

Taiwan has never officially declared independence from China, while Beijing views it as part of its territory under the 'One China' policy.

The US is a staunch ally of the region, selling Taipei billions of dollars in weapons.
