Mewlana Jalal ad-Din Rumi (1207-1273) is a Persian poet known simply as Rumi.

Rumi was a mystic, belonging to the Sufi tradition in Islam.

He wrote in Persian, Turkish, Arabic, and even (at times) Greek.

So even in his own day, there was something universal and even cosmopolitan about Rumi’s wisdom and ideas.
