The Republican party strengthened its hold on the North Carolina legislature, took control of the state Supreme Court and retained the open U.S. Senate left vacant by the retirement of Sen. Richard Burr in Tuesday's midterm election.  Republicans won a 30-seat supermajority in the 50-member Senate but fell one vote short of a supermajority in the House despite defeating six Democratic incumbents.
