Fathima Beevi, first woman judge of Supreme Court, passes away

Justice Fathima Beevi, the first woman judge in Supreme Court, passed away at a hospital in Kollam. She was a gold medallist from Government Law College in Thiruvananthapuram. Beevi started practising as a lawyer in 1950 and was appointed as subordinate munsif in 1958. She served as a high court judge till 1989 and then became a judge in Supreme Court till 1992. She was the first woman in Asia to hold this position. After retiring, Beevi was appointed as Tamil Nadu governor in 1997. Her tenure was controversial due to her actions regarding J Jayalalithaa and DMK.
