May To Ask EU Leaders To Commit To Temporary Irish Backstop

U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May is headed to Brussels for an EU summit after  surviving a no-confidence vote  on Wednesday.

At that summit, she's expected to ask EU members to  further commit  to a temporary Northern Ireland "backstop."  The plan would require Northern Ireland — which is part of the U.K. — to follow some EU regulations that the U.K. wouldn't have to.

It's an effort to avoid a hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, which is part of the EU.  European leaders have said they won't totally renegotiate the Irish backstop, but they might be willing to assure the U.K. that the plan would be temporary.  European Council President Donald Tusk tweeted ahead of the summit that he would meet with May "for last-minute talks."
