(41NBC/WMGT) – The Atlanta Community Food Bank held its summer meals kick-off celebration at Bruce Elementary School in Macon Wednesday.

Our top story tonight at 6: keeping kids healthy and well-fed, that's the goal of the summer food service program in bibb county.

The program started today at bruce elementary school in macon.

So from now ... until july 12th... kids can receive free, healthy meals at nearly 50 locations.

Rashaad... a state-wide initiative to feed children in georgia for the summer has started.

Executive director of school nutrition for the bibb county school district, timikel sharpe, is encouraging parents to stop by one of the summer hunger program sites -- where kids can enjoy free meals with no registration.

Nat: timikel sharpe: what this means to them is is that their children don't go without healthy nutritious meals throughout the summer so you know a lot of people don't think about it you know it's summer break it's time to play but when it comes to that essential component of the day which is food service this is where we stepping in to make sure that they have breakfast if they're at a breakfast and lunch for the day as well community leaders and officials came together today to help make a difference and to support the annual program.

David griffin: it means a whole lot of some of the things are very important to our continuous effort to feed those kids and our community.

Timikel sharpe: we collaborate year-round with many of the other agencies throughout the county and the state of the nation like the dairy council and the food bank.
