School districts throughout the area are getting creative to make sure their students are receiving meals during the week while they're shutdown.

School districts throughout the state are making decisions on whether or not theyl provide meals for their students while schools are shut down.whitko community schools decided they will, but are doing so in a unique way.

Fox caleb saylor explains.

Avi a three kids that lot f mouths to feed, so it really helpful.

Howa family is one of many in whitko community schools who are getting some of her kids daily meals from the diste doing a good job, a really good job actually of choosing foods that all the kids are going to enjoy.

That really helps and takes the burden off my plate a little bit too.

Covid-19 closure whitko superintendent dr. brandon penrod says the district had discussions on how giving students their meals could be done e, of course, talke about just having meals ready.

They can come pick them up.

We weren real sure that would work for, say a second grader who gets hungry, but can drive to the school.

We decided hat maybe that wasn the best idea.

If we do something better, lets try to do better.

They decided on meal delivery.

Ur cafeteria people, our food service director, she jumped in, our transportation director as e ll and they been working non-stop trying to figure this out with the logistics ane done an excellent job of doing that.

The families sign up through a google doc.

Food services in the district pack up some lunches, load them on the school bus, and bus drivers deliver them to the families.

Regardless if they receive free and reduced lunch or not.?

Currently, the district provides over 800 meals pe day and they aren getting reimbursed for a single m al because they can both deliver meals and meet strict guidelines put in place by the usda el always do what best for kids and what right for kids.

For families like the howards, that means another meal for their kihis is fabu kind of a god- send in whitley county, caleb saylor, fox 55 news the district did hold a meeting this afternoon to discuss whether they would try to get reimbursed for their meals.

They plan on trying to join a program through the state that will pay them back for meals going to students who receive free and reduced
