Protesters gather despite safety concerns

Despite social media threats to a scheduled protest in downtown Chico, many gathered to protest the death if George Floyd anyway.

And it was a protest that happened despite actually being cancelled.

Brandon - there had been concerns going into tonight?

Alan - organizers had called off the event for safety reasons after some threats on social media... but that didn't stop people from showing up... hundreds gathered throughout the afternoon and evening in chico to protest the in- custody death of george floyd... a high turnout that shocked a few... i thought coming back to chico cause i go to school out here i thought i wasn't going to havepeople stand in solidarity with me and it's cool cause yeah there's not a lot of color out here in chico but we still have people that stand with respect and solidarity with us for sure... it was just good to see that chico is with us and just we want all positive energy in this protest... businesses in the downtown area prepared in case the protests turned violent but it was peaceful all throughout... we're just trying to bring justice.

Justice for the loved ones that we lost.

We've lost a lot of people.

Many shared personal stories and resources for education during today's protest... and even demonstrators here in the city of chico as you can see are on the floor for a total of 8 minutes of 46 seconds -- each second representing the amount of time george floyd had a knee to his neck... i can't breathe x2 protesters filtered in-and- out but their passion was felt at all times... there is another rally scheduled for friday at the chico city plaza.

Live in chico brandon benitez ccycco... threats on social media associated with tonight's protest prompted chico officials to postpone tonight's city council meeting.

Councilman sean morgan confirmed that the meeting was cancelled based on a recommendation from the police department out of an abundance of caution.
