Are officially back on purdue's campus today.

The university is kicking off its early start and summer start programs for incoming freshman.

These students are the first to perience campus under its new covid-19 safety measures.

News 18's micah upshaw shows us a preview of how campus will operate come this fall.

:23 mos: i really wanted to like go back to school and actually get some learning started, i feel like if i just stick myself like back at home, i feel like i wouldn't be able to get anything done.

M: students are happy to be on purdue's campus, especially for the first time.

The university is continuing its on campus five-week early start and summer start programs -- which gives incoming students a jump start on the school year.

S j: the first year of college is definitely the most critical for college students and having summer start and early start really helps students with that transition to college.

M: students can earn up to 9-credit hours participating in these summer programs. this year's session has a total of one- thousand students.

600 living on campus and the other 400 taking classes online remotely.

As we continue in the covid-19 pandemic, purdue's director of summer sessions says safety and learning is at the forefront.

J: the students coming this summer aren't backing down from this pandemic.

They're protecting purdue pledge, they're taking all the steps necessary to keep themselves, the purdue community, our faculty and staff safe.

M: each student was administered a covid-19 test upon arrival.

They were also given a kit with masks, a face shield, and other sanitation items. all in class and outside activities are happening with proper social- distancing as well.

This process will operate the same when classes begin for all students in the fall.

J: the move in process has gone very smoothly over the last few days.

We've received many positive comments from the students and their parents.

All 34 program mentors were tested for covid-19 earlier in the week.

Those results came back negative.

The summer session officially begins on monday.
