Concerned parents say they will home-school during the pandemic

One parent said he and his wife have decided to home-school their 7-year-old when school resumes next month out of safety concerns.

He explained why.

Schools are supposed to go back next month, and a lot of families are concerned about their kids safety.

Wtva's bronson woodruff spoke with one parent who said he and his wife have decided to homeschool their son.

."

Benjamin smith is the farher of a seven-year old boy.

His son has asthma, making him high risk, and causing his parents even greater concern for his safety when school starts back next month.

"we're having to kind of judge what we're doing with him."

Smith said his son hasn't had an asthma attack in a couple months, but they've happened before.

"we've had several scares."

To smith, homeschooling sounded like a far better option.

"we've got leap frog and stuff like that at the house, so i was like well, let's just go ahead and have him homeschooled."

He said after talking it over with his wife, they've decide to teach their son from home until the coronavirus scare is over..

Standup this is nettleton primary school where smith's son attends.

The governor said in a press conference earlier today that he does not inted to keep schools closed at this time.

He based that on information from the american pediatrics association.

"recently i've seen some intense rhetoric saying that opening schools will mean people will die.

The american academy of pediatrics says that closing schools could in fact, itself, push children to a higher risk of death."

Smith said he feels he would not only be putting his son in danger by sending him to school, but also the rest of his family.

He said they have cancer in the family as well, and he feels possibly subjecting anyone to the coronavirus simply isn't worth the risk.
