Butte County Public Health announced 71 new positive coronavirus cases today alone.

That marks a county-high increase since the pandemic began.

Tonight -- butte county ends the day with 71 new positive coronavirus cases... action news now reporter brandon benitez has the latest with where butte county stands fighting this pandemic... alan, 71 new cases today alone is butte county's highest one-day increase since the pandemic started... unfortunately, in spite of our ongoing work with businesses to gain compliance and businesses doing the best they can to comply cases continue to climb but butte county public health says a spike in cases between 18-24 year olds is emerging... with school now back in session -- people in the downtown area i spoke to -- say they're not surprised... luis l: i'm thinking it's cause of school for sure like it's gotten into the rhythm of things again so more people are starting to hang out... i don't think people really care anymore honestly.

This spike coming one day after chico state president ann hutcinson urged students to take safety precautions... luis l: i'm doordashing right now so i have to have my mask on, but other than that i don't really see masks and people aren't taking precautions you know.

Alejandro law: unfortunately i don't see enough masks when i walk around... it's dissapointing.

People who aren't going to wear a mask aren't going to wear a mask no matter what happens.

If individuals do not monitor their own behavior and take saftey precautions, case numbers will continue to increase.

Butte county has now been on the of those have recovered... 21 people have died.

303 are currently in isolation, and 15 are currently hospitalized.
