Berry Creek firefighters who lost station are moving into new one

Weeks after the Bear Fire swept through Berry Creek and burned down a firehouse, firefighters from Volunteer Station 61 are getting a new home.

At this time.

A fire crew is about to have a home again after losing their station in the bear fire.

Action news now reporter amy lanski has new reporting tonight - she was in berry creek with the crew today.

"i am at station 61 and i just spoke to one of the firefighters who used to work here and he said it is important to them to give the station the proper send off."

Zac gable: "we are planning on rebuilding the station but we know it is going to take a year or two before we get a new station.

So today is kind of symbolic to show we are not going anywhere and we love our community and we love our station and we are going to honor it and promise to rebuild."

Na* flag being raised zac gable was out with the crew helping people evacuate the night of the fire.

"we were chocked and kind of blown away by the fact it was gone.

I mean all of our equipment, everything we were doing.

All we had what was on our backs and in the engine.

The station has been here for forty years.

Gable grew up in berry creek and says that this fire station is dear to his heart.

"the station was significant to us because it is part of who we are we want to do a little send off ceremony."

Nat* amy "now that the flag is raised everyone will be heading to the old heart mills station in berry creek where the firefighters from station 61 will now be living."

"right behind me is where firefighters from 61's will be living so they are about to raise a new flag."

Even though the new station is about seven miles from the old one..

Gable says people will still get the help they need.

"moving seven miles to the new station isn't really that far of a move considering the area we were covering.

In addition most of the surviving homes are on this side of town.

The firefighters are working with team rubicon to fix up the new station.

"we have been working with some other ngo's and some donators that have been giving us equipment and furniture.

I have spent the last couple weeks here at the fire station cleaning cob webs and trimming the hedges.

It had been mothballed for at least ten years."

"gable says they are in the process of finishing up important paperwork so they can move into the new fire house.

Until then though firefighters who lost homes in the fire are living in these two trailers behind me.
