Rishi Sunak to pay France £478m to tackle small boat crossings

The UK will pay France £478 million over the next three years to try and prevent small boats from crossing the Channel.

The package will fund a new detention centre in France and hundreds of extra law enforcement officers on French shores.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced the package after holding talks with French President Emmanuel Macron at the first Franco-British Summit since 2018.

The summit represents a thawing in relations between the two countries after five years of Brexit wrangling, disputes over fishing rights, and two prime ministers’ sometimes undiplomatic utterances.
